Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing "voices." Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments – including various forms of psychotherapy, medications, psychosocial interventions and other treatments, depending on the needs of each patient.

Medical Cannibis

Cannabis (marijuana) is a plant that contains biologically active substances in its leaves, flowers, and buds and their extracts (for example, oil and concentrates). Medical cannabis can help treat symptoms like pain, nausea, and lack of appetite. It may be used by people who have conditions like cancer, AIDS, or multiple sclerosis.

Medical cannabis MAY be helpful for some health conditions.

These may include

  • Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy (chemo) for cancer.

  • Low appetite and weight loss for people who have AIDS.

  • Muscle stiffness for some multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury patients.

  • Chronic pain, in particular nerve (neuropathic), or pain at the end of life.

Cannabis is available as fresh, a dried plant or oil extracts from Licensed Producers. They usually contain both THC and CBD.

If you think you might want to try medical cannabis, talk to your health care provider about what type of cannabis might help relieve your symptoms.
